Lesson 6 | Harnessing The Four Dimensions of Truth & Reality
In Lesson 6 of the Integral Mastery Primer, Ken Wilber introduces one of the most unifying elements of the Integral framework: the four quadrants. Every phenomenon in the universe — every “holon,” or whole that is also part of a larger whole — can be viewed from four equally real perspectives. These include the interior of the individual (the subjective “I”), the exterior of the individual (the objective “It”), the interior of the collective (the cultural “We”), and the exterior of the collective (the systemic “Its”). Together, these domains reveal the multiple dimensions of truth and reality.
Ken shows how problems arise when we absolutize just one quadrant — reducing everything to brain chemistry, or to culture, or to private experience. This kind of fragmentation leaves us with only part of the picture. Integral practice, by contrast, asks us to honor all four perspectives as equally valid, each offering insights the others cannot. When combined with levels, lines, states, and types, the quadrants give us a comprehensive framework for transformation, bridging divides between science and spirituality, self and society, and the inner and outer dimensions of life.
